Furnace Repair

When the winter chill settles in, there’s nothing more comforting than stepping into a warm home – as long as the furnace is doing its job. Most people know their furnace is essential for staying cozy, but it’s easy to take for granted when it’s working silently in the background.
Like any appliance, however, furnaces need regular attention to keep performing at their best. When it falls into disrepair, it’s important to act quick. After all, a stitch in time saves nine. The trained technicians at Alvarez Heating & Air Conditioning are always ready and willing to help.

What Is a Furnace?

A furnace is a central component of your home’s heating system. It generates heat which is then distributed through the home via air through ducts.
Most furnaces run on natural gas, oil, or electricity. Gas furnaces are by far the most common in residential homes because they are efficient and cost-effective. Electric and oil furnaces are also used, but they tend to be less common and typically cost more to operate.

Furnace Repair

How Does a Furnace Work?

While the specifics may vary slightly depending on the type of furnace you’ve got, the general process follows a simple pattern. Let’s dive in:

  • When the temperature inside your home drops below the level you’ve set on your thermostat, the thermostat sends a signal to the furnace. The alerted furnace kicks into gear.
  • If you have a gas furnace, the igniter starts a flame. For electric furnaces, heating elements are powered up. The heat generated is then passed through a heat exchanger. This just makes sure that the air is heated without the combustion gases mixing with the air that’s going to enter your living space.
  • Once the air is warmed, the blower fan kicks in to push the heated air through your ducts and into your rooms.
  • Once the home reaches the desired temperature, the furnace pauses until the thermostat detects another temperature drop… and repeats.

Furnace Maintenance is Critical!

Your furnace works hard to keep your home warm, and regular maintenance makes sure it can continue operating safely and efficiently for as long as possible.
By cleaning and replacing filters, lubricating moving parts, and checking for wear and tear, you optimize the unit’s efficiency and reduce the chances of costly breakdowns. A neglected furnace, meanwhile, can result in dangerous carbon monoxide leaks, gas leaks, or even fire hazards.

Signs It’s Time to Call Alvarez Heating & Air Conditioning

Furnaces, even with routine maintenance and proper care, can fall into disrepair. Luckily, they’ll give you warning signs when something’s wrong – but you’ve got to be paying attention. Here are some tell-tale red flags to recognize:

  • Your furnace is running but no heat is coming through.
  • Banging, squealing, or scraping sounds.
  • The air coming from your vents is weak or inconsistent.
  • A sudden spike in your energy bills without a corresponding change in your usage.
  • The pilot light is yellow instead of blue (in gas-powered furnaces).

Furnace repair requires specialized knowledge and experience, and attempting to fix it yourself can lead to further damage or even unsafe conditions. It’s always a good idea to hire a trained technician from a licensed and insured HVAC company for any repair or maintenance needs.
